General provisions

The course is common to all specialisations in the Specialist Nursing Programme.

Entry requirements

To be admitted to the Specialist Nursing Programme, a licence to practice as a nurse issued from The National Board of Health and Welfare is required as well as a Bachelor´s Degree of 180 credits with at least 90 credits in the main field of study that is Caring Sciences, Caring Sciences with a specialisation in Nursing, Nursing Science, or an equivalent foreign degree. Furthermore, professional activity as a nurse equivalent to a minimum of 12 months full time is required . The specialisation Paramedical care also requires a driving licence category B.

Learning outcomes

On completion of the course, the student should be able to:

• account for quantitative and qualitative research methodologies
• evaluate and argue for choice of design and method
• evaluate academic studies critically
• analyse, evaluate and apply theories, models and concepts in caring sciences on scientific issues in clinical situations
• analyse, evaluate and discuss caring sciences issues considering relevant social and health care ethical aspects
• integrate knowledge as well as analyse, assess and handle complex issues based on limited information
• reflect on research ethical positions
• identify and evaluate his or her need of additional knowledge in the area

Instruction

The teaching includes group exercises, individual literature studies, seminars and web-based teaching.

Seminars and study assignments presented in writing

Assessment

Examination takes place on several occasions during the course and consists of individually written examination assignments and seminar participation.

Other directives

A student who fails an examination is entitled to 4 re-examinations.(= in total 5 examinations). After 5 failed examinations, the student may lose his or her guaranteed place in the programme. If special circumstances apply, the programme committee can admit to additional examinations.

Each occasion the student participates in an examination is regarded as one examination attempt. Submission of a so called blank exam is regarded as one examination.

According to a decision of the Faculty of Medicine (Dnr 3579/98, 3651/981) the student should hand in a written application to the course leader/director of studies to participate in examination a fourth time. Course leader/director of studies should than analyse the situation together with the student and when necessary offer support actions in order to optimise the student's preparations before examination.
