Learning outcomes

On completion of the course, the student will be able to:

  1. Based on central ethical concepts and principles, independently describe and reflect on nursing of older people in different living environments, including the final stage of life, in relation to older persons unique needs and experiences
  2. Reflect on and apply an ethical approach in ethical difficult situations in nursing of old people
  3. Reflect on and apply knowledge of how work with basic values among staff can be carried out in care of old people
  4. Reflect on and apply knowledge of how the palliative nursing philosophy can be applied together with an ethical approach in nursing of old people in the final stage of life
  5. Apply observation as a structured data collection method and reflect on its application in scientific studies of nursing of old people
  6. Reflect on research ethical questions in scientific studies of nursing of old people and apply research ethical principles practically
  7. Identify needs of additional knowledge to continuously being able to develop his skills

Instruction

The educational basic view is based on that the student brings knowledge and experience The student is assumed to be active and participate in his/her education and to be responsible for his/her own learning process. The ambition is, that the student develops an ability to analyse, explain and evaluate relationships between concepts and phenomena that are studied and can show ability to apply his/her knowledge. Learning is stimulated by own activity, in exchange and interaction with others and in association to the student's own knowledge and earlier experiences. The work methods vary between individual work, study group work, lectures, literature studies, seminars and directed study assignments adapted to clinic related education.

Assessment

Aim 1-3 and 7. Individual written examination in the form of a literature compilation Examination consists of reviewing and evaluating central ethical concepts in scientific literature and accounting for their applications in relation to basic values work in care of old people, nursing of individuals with dementia and multimorbidity, and in use of welfare technology.

Aim 1, 4 and 7. Individual written examination in the form of a literature compilation. Examination consists of reviewing and evaluating central ethical concepts in scientific literature and account for their applications in relation to application of the palliative nursing philosophy in care of old people in the final stage of life.

Aim 1,3,4,5 and 6. Group examination in the form of a clinic related learning assignment that is followed up in a seminar. Examination consists of application of and ethical reflection on observations of the communication of staff about old people in clinical nursing practice

To pass the course, it is required that the all parts of the course are completed and passed. Pass with distinction requires passed with distinction grade in both the individual examinations.

After regular examination, the student has the right to re-examination at no more than 4 times. If there are special circumstances, additional re-examination can be permitted. Special circumstances are those stated in regulations in Swedish National Agency for Higher Education, HSVFS 1999:1.
