General provisions

The course is elective and is included in the Specialist Nursing Programme with focus on district nurse.

The course consists of 7.5 credits of clinical placement. The course can also be implemented in international exchange programme.

Entry requirements

To be admitted to the Specialist Nursing Programme, a licence to practice as a nurse issued from The National Board of Health and Welfare is required as well as a Bachelor´s Degree of 180 credits with at least 90 credits in the main field of study that is Caring Sciences, Caring Sciences with a specialisation in Nursing, Nursing Science, or an equivalent foreign degree. Furthermore, professional activity as a nurse equivalent to a minimum of 12 months full time is required .

Learning outcomes

On completion of the course, the student will be able to:

1. demonstrate advanced knowledge in the district nurse's field of knowledge

2. demonstrate advanced knowledge of educational theories and didactics in connection with information and teaching

3. demonstrate advanced knowledge in specific nursing in the district nurse's field of knowledge

4. demonstrate an understanding of cultural aspects of the organisation and field of nursing in the current activities

5. plan and implement teaching and instructions for different categories of students and health-care personnel

6. analyse and assess and act in complex health care situations

7. prepare strategies for implementation of national and international research results and initiate change management in the discipline

8. with a professional approach advocate the rights of the patient and the family/close relations

9. evaluate his/her knowledge and skills at work and in his/her teaching - and leadership role

10. reflect on his/her ability to apply acquired knowledge and experiences in new situations

11. evaluate his/her knowledge, own achievements and ability to perceptiveness and cooperation and identify the need for continued knowledge development and personal development

Instruction

Compulsory teaching in Uppsala may occur. To offer students a wider teaching competence, some teaching on Campus Gotland will be via link or other IT-solutions from Uppsala.

Supervision by specialist nurse in collaboration with clinical lecturer/clinical senior lecturer

COMPULSORY PARTS

Introduction to course, seminars, proficiency training, clinical placement, study assignments with written and oral presentation.

Assessment

Examination of the course implies assessment of knowledge, skills and attitudes according to formulated learning outcomes, AssCE-form (Löfmark, A.& Thorell-Ekstrand, I. 2009) study assignments and clinical examinations related to the course objectives.

Other directives

Student failing examination is allowed 4 re-examinations (= in total 5 examinations). After 5 failed examinations, the student can lose his or her spot in the programme. If special circumstances apply, the programme committee can admit additional examination attempts.

Each occasion the student participates in an examination is regarded as an examination attempt. Submission of so called blank exam is regarded as one examination.

According to the decision by the Faculty of Medicine (Dnr 3579/98, 3651/98I) the student should hand in a written application to the course coordinator/director of studies to be allowed to participate in examination a fourth time. Course coordinator/director of studies and student should thereafter analyse the situation together and when necessary offer support actions in order to optimise the student's preparations before examination.

Courses that include clinical placement:

Students who have failed to accomplish the placement with a pass have the right to undergo renewed placement once (DNR 3579/98, 3651/98l). Time for renewed placement is determined case-by-case, based on when teacher and supervisor in placement are available, preferably during the semester.

Placement may include evening/weekend shifts and commuting.
