General provisions

The course is elective and is included in the Specialist Nursing Programme with focus on district nurse 75 credits. The contents of the course build further on the contents of previous courses and joint contents of scientific method. The course can be carried out in the framework of international exchange programme

Entry requirements

Admitted to and commenced studies in the specialist nursing programme, with focus on district nurse 75 credits. Passed courses including 15 credits in the specialisation.

Learning outcomes

During the course, the student will be able to provide advanced knowledge in general and specific nursing and on basis of knowledge in scientific methods independently carry out a degree project.

On completion of the course, the student will be able to:

1. demonstrate advanced knowledge in the district nurse's field

2. demonstrate advanced knowledge about nursing theories and concepts that constitute a scientific basis for the field of the district nurse

3. demonstrate advanced knowledge about the application of scientific working methods

4. demonstrate advanced knowledge of planning, implementation, evaluation and application of quality and development work in primary health care

5. plan, formulate queries and carry out search strategies based on sound conceptual analysis in the field and thereafter select appropriate information resources

6. critically review, analyse and evaluate national and international research results and present and discuss scientific studies in the field

7. plan and carry out an independent scientific work in the district nurse's field and describe the relevance in relation to nursing theories and concepts

8. report the independent work in a scientific manner orally and in writing

9. reflect on the legal and ethical limitations of using different types of research data

10. review critically the own and others' independent works

11. reflect on and evaluate the importance of scientific work in nursing within the specialisation

12. evaluate and discuss the own scientific work in relation to relevant nursing research in the field including theories and concepts

Content

Preparation of a project plan

Implementation and writing an individual degree project

Presentation and argumentation of the written degree project and reviewing another student's degree project

Instruction

Compulsory teaching in Uppsala may occur. To offer students a wider teaching competence, some teaching on Campus Gotland will be via link or other IT-solutions from Uppsala.

Independent degree project supported by web-based teaching, supervision individually and in seminars and literature studies. The degree project is discussed at a specific seminar with student reviewers and in the presence of an examiner.

COMPULSORY PARTS

Introduction to the course, participation in the seminars, study assignments with written and oral presentation.

Assessment

Examination takes place in the form of oral and written presentations of project plan and degree project and participation in seminars. The student shall with approved result:

- prepare a project plan for a degree project

- carry out an independent degree project

- as author of the written scientific work defend his/her degree project

- as an opponent review other student's degree project critically

Other directives

A complete, unbound and single sided copy of the approved thesis must be submitted to the course administrator for archiving. You should also register your essay in the Digital Scientific Archive (DIVA), either abstract/summary or the full essay. These two things must be done before registration of the course can be done.
