General provisions

The course is given in term 2 in the X-ray Nursing Programme. The course includes the modules medical care and geriatric care.

Entry requirements

Admitted to the X-ray nursing programme.

Learning outcomes

After the 1st module Medical care, the student is expected to be able to understand and account for

- the contents of the care of heart diseases, vessels, the respiratory organs, kidneys and urinary tract.

- the contents of the care of rheumatologic and oncological diseases, infection and diabetes.

- nursing in connection with diagnostic examinations.

- age and gender related differences in diagnostics and treatment.

- the importance of microorganisms for disease and health.

- hygienic principles at different infection conditions.

- the contents of the care in connection with pain and pain treatment

- technics and controls at deposition of peripheral vein catheter, and insertion of peripheral vein catheter at practical exercising.

- technics and controls at deposition of injection and training of this at practical exercises.

- the basic principles of measurement of blood pressure, pulse and respiration.

- the meaning of requirements of documentation at care in connection with different diseases.

- laws and regulations in health care with relevance for the contents of the module.

After module 2 Geriatric care the student is expected to be able to understand and account for

- biological aging

- differences in diagnostics between young and elderly patients

- common geriatric diseases and illnesses: stroke, Parkinson disease, vascular dementia, Alzheimer's disease and acute confusion

- drugs and the elderly

- concretize treatment of patients with commonly occurring geriatric diseases and illnesses in connection with radiological examinations.

- laws and regulations in health care with relevance for the contents of the module.

Module 1 Medical care

- medical diseases in heart, vessels, respiratory organs, kidneys and urinary tract as well as diagnostics and treatment

- rheumatologic and oncological diseases, infection and diabetes as well as diagnostics and treatment

- infection and disease transmission

- pharmacology

- pain and pain treatment

- clinical chemistry

- documentation

- Medical technics: peripheral vein catheter as well as subcutaneous, intramuscular and intravenous injection

- methods of measurement and documentation referring to blood pressure, pulse and respiration

- CPR with simple aids

Module 2 Geriatric care

- gerontology

- geriatric diseases and illnesses

- diagnostics

- treatment

- nursing

- rehabilitation

Instruction

The student should seek and apply knowledge based on science and evidence

STUDIES Lectures, work in PBL groups, assignments individually or in groups, seminars and practical exercises.

COMPULSORY PARTS Introduction to course, scheduled group meetings, assignments individually or in groups with written submission of minor essay, seminars and practical exercises.

Assessment

Examination is continuous throughout the course in the form of written and oral assignments individually and in groups. All parts and a written individual final examination included in the course must be approved before the course is entirely passed.
