Entry requirements

120 credits including 90 credits Chemistry or Physics, Spectroscopy 10 credits , or equivalent. Proficiency in English equivalent to the Swedish upper secondary course English 6.

Learning outcomes

On completion of the course, the student should be able to:

  • define the fundamental concepts and definitions in laser physics
  • use the acquired knowledge to determine the important functions of laser systems
  • describe the properties and operation principles of some of the most commonly used laser system
  • describe the most important laser spectroscopic methods and their applications in photochemistry and photophysics
  • practical applications of laser spectroscopic methods in science and technology

Content

Principles of light amplification. conditions for laser action, laser cavities and laser radiation, laser systems

Nonlinear phenomena, short pulse generation, laser spectroscopic methods and instrumentation.

Laser spectroscopy: Absorption and fluorescence spectroscopy, Doppler free spectroscopy, Raman, Ultra-fast , nonlinear and multi-photon spectroscopy

Instruction

Lectures, seminars, problem classes, group projects and laboratories.

Assessment

Written and/or oral examination during or/and at the end of the course, 4 credits. Laboratory sessions correspond to 1 credit. The final grade is a weighted combination of the results of the examination and laboratory sessions.

If there are special reasons for doing so, an examiner may make an exception from the method of assessment indicated and allow a student to be assessed by another method. An example of special reasons might be a certificate regarding special pedagogical support from the disability coordinator of the university.
