Learning outcomes

On completion of the course, the student should be able to:

  • describe the exogenous and endogenous processes in the landscape and their imprtance for landform development, and distinguish the mechanisms that control these processes
  • analyse how variations in climate and environment affect the development of landforms
  • assess how different scales of time and space affect geomorphological processes
  • describe the historical background and historical concepts within geomorphological research
  • explain and apply geomorphological methods used in research today

Content

The course reviews topics within geomorphology and glacial geology such as: history and main concepts of geomorphology; landform development at different spatial and time scales; endogenic and exogenic processes, their controlling mechanisms, and their interaction to form the landscape. Interaction between geomorphological processes and climate; the role of humans in landscape development; field and laboratory methods relevant to geomorphology.

Instruction

Lectures, seminars, written reports and papers, field trips and computer laboratory work. The attendance in seminars and field trips is obligatory.

Assessment

The course is graded using a written examination (9 credits) and compulsory activities (6 credits).

If there are special reasons for doing so, an examiner may make an exception from the method of assessment indicated and allow a student to be assessed by another method. An example of special reasons might be a certificate regarding special pedagogical support from the disability coordinator of the university.
