Learning outcomes

The aim of the degree project is to prepare the student to work as an engineer mastering a clear scientific as well as engineering approach and methodology.

On completion of the course, the student should be able to:

  • identify and formulate technical problems,
  • independently plan and carry out an assignment within given timeframes by employing scientific and engineering approaches and methodologies,
  • search, compile and use relevant literature,
  • demonstrate advanced knowledge in a specific sub-area within the field of the programme,
  • present and discuss his/her results in a clear and correct language both orally and in writing to different target groups,
  • provide constructive criticism on others' reports.

Content

In the degree project, the student should work on as well as present a specific task which should be relevant to the engineering programme from which the student is to graduate. The assignment should be chosen so that knowledge from earlier courses can be applied and equally so at a more advanced level by acquiring new knowledge necessary to carry out the work. The extent of the task should be defined in view of its timely execution and reporting within the given timeframe.

To achieve the goals, the student during the course should:

  • independently, but under supervision, define a technical problem, study it, interpret and evaluate the results as well as present the work orally and in writing,
  • search, evaluate and compile information and knowledge relevant to the chosen problem,
  • participate actively in seminars and, if possible, in other activities where the work is carried out,
  • comment and provide constructive criticism both orally and in writing (in a public debate) on other students' reports and oral presentations.

Instruction

Supervision.

Assessment

Oral and written presentation of the degree project (further information under Other Directives). Written and oral opposition on another degree project (normally within the same programme), or equivalent (defined by the course examiner).

If there are special reasons for doing so, an examiner may make an exception from the method of assessment indicated and allow a student to be assessed by another method. An example of special reasons might be a certificate regarding special pedagogical support from the disability coordinator of the university.
