Entry requirements

A Bachelor's degree and 60 credits at Master's level, including at least 30 credits in human-computer interaction and 7.5 credits in scientific method at Master's level. Proficiency in English equivalent to the general entry requirements for first-cycle (Bachelor's level) studies.

Learning outcomes

Regarding knowledge and understanding, on completion of the course, the student is expected to be able to:

• give an account of the status of research in a self-chosen part of the subject human-computer interaction,
• describe the scientific theories and methods that are relevant for the research domain that the thesis concerns in an in-depth and nuanced way.

Regarding competence and skills, on completion of the course, the student is expected to be able to:

• search and compile scientific literature,
• delimit a scientific problem, plan a scientifically based study of the problem, choose appropriate methods, analyse the results and, where appropriate, generate testable hypotheses to explain observations made,
• base and motivate the method chosen for study and analysis with reference to relevant scientific literature in an in-depth and nuanced way,
• present empirical results in a correct and understandable way,
• give constructive criticism on others' texts treating problems in the subject.

Regarding judgement and approach, on completion of the course, the student is expected to be able to:

• discuss and assess the possibilities and risks associated with research in the subject human-computer interaction and the use of results of such research,
• critically reflect on ethical aspects of the research process,
• critically reflect on their own research results.

Content

The thesis is an independent assignment that is presented in writing in an academic paper written in Swedish or English. The thesis should be presented orally at a seminar. At the seminar, the work should also be defended.

Lectures and supervision.

Assessment

Written and oral presentation of the work as well as critical review of another Master's thesis in the subject.

If there are special reasons for doing so, an examiner may make an exception from the method of assessment indicated and allow a student to be assessed by another method. An example of special reasons might be a certificate regarding special pedagogical support from the University´s disability coordinator or a decision by the department’s working group for study matters.
