Entry requirements

Admitted to the Master's Programme in Social Sciences, specialising in Economic History. One of the two skill courses within the programme must be completed.

Learning outcomes

On completion of the course, the student is expected to be able to

• based on the state of research within a specific area of economic history, identify and formulate relevant questions and critically examine and operationalise them.
• with high level of independence and using economic historical methods, design and carry out a clearly-defined scientific study that satisfactorily reflects and informs the formulated issue and that has clear relevance for the chosen field of research.
• independently write an academic Master's thesis and defend it at a seminar.
• critically review and discuss another student's academic thesis.
• present her/his preliminary paper and actively and constructively contribute in seminar discussions of other students' papers and theses.

Content

The course includes the independent writing and defence of an academic Master's thesis, an evaluation of another student's thesis and active participation in seminars.

Instruction

Instruction is given in the form of supervision and participation in seminar activity.

Assessment

The examination takes place through thesis work and active seminar participation. Ranked grades are given in the course.

If there are special reasons for doing so, an examiner may make an exception from the method of assessment indicated and allow a student to be assessed by another method. An example of special reasons might be a certificate regarding special pedagogical support from the University's disability coordinator.
