Learning outcomes

After passing the course, the student should be able to:

Middle Egyptian texts

  • describe specific problems concerning grammar or vocabulary in the texts dealt with during the course,
  • translate the texts included in the course,
  • account for and discuss the text content in relation to the cultural-historical context.

Middle and Old Egyptian texts

  • translate and interpret more demanding Middle Egyptian texts as well as Old Egyptian inscriptions,
  • account for the main differences between Old and Middle Egyptian,
  • describe and discuss specific problems in the texts,
  • account for and discuss the text content in relation to the cultural-historical context.

Ancient Egypt in an international perspective

  • present an understanding of the position of Pharaonic Egypt in an international context,
  • discuss the relationship between Egypt and its surrounding areas, in particular Nubia and Syria-Palestine,
  • have knowledge of the most central source materials for the theme.

Essay

  • select, compile and discuss a selection of Egyptological publications and to form a thematically coherent essay with good readability,
  • apply the basics of scientific writing in terms of accuracy and citations,
  • search for and select relevant literature in databases.

Content

Module 1. Middle Egyptian texts 7.5 credits

During the course, medium-difficult Middle Egyptian texts are read with emphasis on grammar and vocabulary. The content of the texts is discussed in relation to cultural history. Texts are read from standard editions or photographs. The students prepare for the teaching opportunities by working with the current texts. The texts represent all genres and source categories such as religious, literary and administrative texts, and letters.

Module 2. Middle and Old Egyptian texts 7.5 credits

During the course, medium to difficult Middle Egyptian texts and Old Egyptian inscriptions are read. The content of the texts is treated in relation to cultural history. In addition to reading from standard editions or photos, reading from original monuments may apply. The students prepare for the teaching opportunities by working with the current texts. The texts represent all genres and source categories such as religious inscriptions and letters.

Module 3. Ancient Egypt in an International Perspective 7.5 credits

The course provides an overview of Egypt's relations with its neighbouring countries and peoples. Political, military and diplomatic areas of activity as well as trade networks are discussed from a diachronic perspective with the help of textual and archaeological sources.

Module 4 Essay 7.5 credits

The course involves the writing of a scientifical essay under supervision on an Egyptological theme based on a small selection of Egyptian source material or literature. The use of library resources and literature search in digital archives is included.

Instruction

The teaching of all modules consists of lectures, literature studies and / or seminars with written and oral student presentations as well as writing a short scientific essay. All teaching is mandatory and not attenteded lextures nmust be compensated for with a written home assignment. The teaching is given in English.

Assessment

Examination takes place on an ongoing basis through oral and written seminar assignments, as well as through a set exam or home assignment.

If there are special reasons, the examiner may make an exception from the specified examination method and allow a student to be examined in another way. Special reasons can e.g. be informed of special pedagogical support from the university's coordinator.

Other directives

Restrictions of the right to take the course in the degree:

  • The course is identical to Ancient Egyptian culture and language, advanced course C, 30 credits, course code 5EG520, and can not be included in the same degree.
