Entry requirements

A Bachelor's degree, equivalent to a Swedish Kandidatexamen, from an internationally recognised university. The main field of study must be within engineering, science or social science. Proficiency in English equivalent to the Swedish upper secondary course English 6.

Learning outcomes

On completion of the course, the student should be able to:

  • identify and explain a wind power project's phases
  • identify, analyse and evaluate the conditions and regulations affecting wind energy development
  • account for and evaluate contracts connected with wind power projects as well as assess insurance and compensation requirements
  • perform and evaluate simple cost analyses and evaluate the basic conditions for the financing of wind power projects
  • account for the basic structure and contents of a postgraduate thesis and critically reflect upon research findings and methodologies
  • clearly present an individual or group assignment within wind power in oral or written form
  • account for the importance of group dynamics in a successful team
  • describe their motivating value system as well as their learning styles

give an account of and analyse sustainability and deployment potential of energy sources

Content

The course includes studies of sustainable development and energy sources as well as their deployment potential. Basic mathematical and physical concepts will be covered. An introduction to prerequisites for wind power development including how a wind turbine works, planning for wind energy, environmental impact, location and economic aspects will be given. The phases of wind power projects are studied. An individual project assignment is included where the student will research the possibility of building wind power at a specific location. Additionally, quantitative and qualitative research methods, statistical analysis and experimental design will be introduced together with the steps of academic reasoning. Oral and written presentations in a scientific context will be discussed and practiced in the course. Group dynamics, diversity and different values are also addressed. Students' learning styles and motivating value systems will be mapped and discussed. A competence inventory will be conducted and students will give feedback on other student's presentations and a group contract will be established.

A site study visit to an operating wind farm is included. Equal opportunities with respect to the Discrimination Act are addressed.

If there are special reasons for doing so, an examiner may make an exception from the method of assessment indicated and allow a student to be assessed by another method. An example of special reasons might be a certificate regarding special pedagogical support from the disability coordinator of the university.
