120 credits including 90 credits Mathematics. Proficiency in English equivalent to the Swedish upper secondary course English 6.

Learning outcomes

On completion of the course, the student should be able to:

• communicate mathematics orally and in writing to people with varying degree of mathematical knowledge,
• provide and process constructive feedback on mathematical writing and presentation,
• explain the role of mathematical research in society,
• analyse philosophical and historical approaches to mathematics and mathematics education,
• reflect on ethical aspects of research in mathematics and applications of mathematics in other subjects.

Content

Methods of mathematical communication and exposition. Methods of providing constructive feedback on written expositions and oral presentations. The role of mathematics in different aspects of modern society. Ethical aspects of mathematics.

Project work that can involve topics such as

• philosophical aspects of mathematics, epistemology of mathematics and mathematics education,
• similarities and differences between science, applied mathematics and pure mathematics,
• open source software and cost of knowledge,
• ethical aspects of data science, mathematical modelling, cryptography and financial mathematics,
• errors in research mathematics, automated and interactive theorem proving,
• diversity among mathematicians.

Instruction

Strong emphasis on project work, but also lectures and discussion seminars.

Assessment

Active participation in seminars (1 credit). Project work and oral presentation (4 credits).

If there are special reasons for doing so, an examiner may make an exception from the method of assessment indicated and allow a student to be assessed by another method. An example of special reasons might be a certificate regarding special pedagogical support from the disability coordinator of the university.
