Entry requirements

50 credits within an engineering programme or 50 credits Electric Engineering. 10 credits Mathematic. Participation in one of the courses Introduction to Scientific Computing and Scientific Computing I (ability to use computer based calculation aids). Proficiency in English equivalent to the Swedish upper secondary course English 6.

Learning outcomes

On completion of the course, the student should be able to:

  • describe the fundamental principle behind finite element solvers,
  • create 2D and 3D construction drawings in standard CAD-software packages,
  • apply FEM-solvers on CAD-drawings with boundary and other essential conditions, solve mechanical problems using combined CAD/FEM software packages,
  • design electromagnetic circuits using combined CAD/FEM software packages,
  • solve electromagnetic field problems using combined CAD/FEM software packages.

Content

CAD/FEM in 2 and 3 dimensions. Fundamentals of finite element methods. Meshing. Definition of boundary conditions. Mechanical problems and their solution using combined CAD/FEM software packages. Design of electromagnetic circuits. Electromagnetic field problems and their solution using combined CAD/FEM software packages.

Instruction

Lectures and project work.

Assessment

Written examination (2 credits) as well as project work (3 credits).

If there are special reasons for doing so, an examiner may make an exception from the method of assessment indicated and allow a student to be assessed by another method. An example of special reasons might be a certificate regarding special pedagogical support from the disability coordinator of the university.
