Entry requirements

120 credits with (1) 90 credits in earth science and 15 credits in chemistry, (2) 90 credits in physics and 30 credits in earth science, 3) 90 credits tecnolopgy and 30 credits earth science, or 4) 90 credits geology. Participation in Mineralogy and Gemology and Metamorphic and Metasomaitc Processes. Proficiency in English equivalent to the Swedish upper secondary course English 6.

Learning outcomes

On completion of the course the student shall be able to:

  • explain tectonic processes and the resulting phenomena on various scales,
  • explain plate tectonic processes, and the global evolution of continental crust,
  • relate petrological processes to different tectonic environments,
  • describe how isotope geology is used to understand orogenic processes,
  • explain the geological evolution of Fennoscandian bedrock from the Archean until today.

Content

The main emphasis will be ancient and current accretionary and collisional orogens as well as (paleo-)ocean opening processes. Well studied orogens in Fennoscandinavia like the Svecofennian/Svecokarelian and Caledonian will be compared with on-going orogens such as the Andean, New Zealand, Himalayan that represent current analogues of accretionary and collisional orogens. The course will present the geological evolution of Fennoscandinavia and Iceland, the role of metamorphism, the influence of orogenic processes for ore formation, as well as recent progress in geochronology. Identification of typical magmatic and metamorphic rocks from different Nordic orogens.

Instruction

Lectures, seminars, case based learning and practical exercises.

Assessment

Exercises and presentation (4 credits). Written examination (6 credits).

If there are special reasons for doing so, an examiner may make an exception from the method of assessment indicated and allow a student to be assessed by another method. An example of special reasons might be a certificate regarding special pedagogical support from the disability coordinator of the university.

Other directives

Cannot be included in the same degree as 1MP006 Regional geology.
