Learning outcomes

The teaching intends to give such knowledge, skills and attitudes that the future physicians in their future work understand the importance of exposures in working life and the environment for the population's health.

Aim

Provide the medical student with basic subject- aimed knowledge and practical education in prevention, diagnostics, treatment and rehabilitation of diseases that are connected with exposures in working life and the environment. Communicate knowledge of the occurrence of these diseases, long-term consequences and importance in a public health perspective. Observe ethical, social, demographic and psychological aspects of diseases within these subject areas. The objective of the course is to provide the students practical and theoretical knowledge within the occupational and environmental medicine. The student should obtain supervision in and practical counselling about the future work as a physician.

Aims of the course

After the course, the student should be able to

- Identify, distinguish and assess risk factors in both the working life and the environment and be knowledegable in preventive methods

- Account at a general level for laws, ordinances and regulations and insurances of significance for the field

- Diagnose and treat the most common diseases that are related to the working life and environmental exposure to such an extent that they can assess and process both independent patients and groups of affected individuals

- Assess occupational capacity and apply occupational medical knowledge within rehabilitation in collaboration with the occupational health services and suggest hearing from this aspect.

- Account for how teh use of chemicals may have environmental impacts and what can be done to prevent that.

- Account for how treatment of the patient may have environmental impacts and how these may be assessed in the procedure.

Content

The course comprises three days.

:

Risk factors in working life and the environment, the diseases that these risk factors may cause and how one prevents the diseases. Laws and rules and insurance system in the area. Rehabilitation, the occupational health services. Drug and the impact of the environment on chemicals

Instruction

Teaching is done in the form of lectures, group work, case discussions, problem-based seminars and study visit.

Assessment

For regulatory framework about absence from compulsory parts and rules for participation in examination, see programme syllabus in the students' guide. The course is completed with a MCQ-examination.

If there are special reasons for doing so, an examiner may make an exception from the method of assessment indicated and allow a student to be assessed by another method. An example of special reasons might be a certificate regarding special pedagogical support from the University's disability coordinator.

Number of examination

Students which have not passed the examination have the right to take the examination 4 additional times (= total 5 examinations). If special circumstances apply, the programme committee may admit additional examinations. Every time the student participates in an examination counts. Submission of so called blank exam is counted as an examination.
