Entry requirements

60 credits in natural sciences, pharmacy or medicine, of which courses totalling at least 15 credits in microbiology, cell biology, molecular biology/biochemistry or genetics must be included.

Learning outcomes

The course shall give the student an understanding of how a research project is carried out by identifying a defined research question, searching for background information and, based on the state of knowledge, developing and applying a project plan within a biomedical subject area.

  • with some independence plan, implement and document a scientific project
  • discuss and interpret own results in a scientific context
  • describe performed experiments in written and oral form

After completing the course, the student shall be able to

  • critically evaluate analysis results and explain reasons for deviations
  • highlight own results in a scientific context
  • show an ethical approach when choosing methods and materials

Content

The individual project course covers the subject area of ​​the selected project where deepening takes place through the project and theoretical studies.

Instruction

The student participates under the guidance of a scientific supervisor for 10 weeks in a specified research project. The student carries out the project under supervision and performs self-studies on the theoretical background to the project by reading literature assigned by the supervisor. Participation in research seminars related to the project's subject as instructed by the supervisor develops the student's scientific discourse. The teaching can be given wholly or partly in English.

Assessment

The project course is examined through the following methods of assessment

  • practical implementation of prepared project plan
  • oral and written presentation and discussion of the completed project

If there are special reasons for doing so, an examiner may make an exception from the method of assessment indicated and allow a student to be assessed by another method. An example of special reasons might be a certificate regarding special pedagogical support from the University´s disability coordinator.

Remark:

The course can be started at any time during the semester provided that the project comprises 10 weeks of full-time study within the semester's study period.
