Learning outcomes

On completion of the course, the student should be able to:

  • apply in depth understanding in practical work in Earth Sciences
  • demonstrate strengthened basis for professional work in either geology, palaeobiology, hydrology/hydrogeology or physical geography.

Content

Work within the field of earth sciences at e.g. SGU (Swedish Geological Survey) or an equivalent employer. The content of the work will be determined on the basis of the specialisation of previous studies. The course can be designed to include e.g. field work and sampling as a basis for a future undergraduate thesis.

Instruction

Teaching is generally carried out by an external supervisor at the employer. If the the work is planned to prepare for an undergraduate thesis, there will be an additional supervisor from the Department of Earth Sciences.

Assessment

Written report and follow-up presentation. The supervisor must additionally submit a certificate about the student's participation.

If there are special reasons for doing so, an examiner may make an exception from the method of assessment indicated and allow a student to be assessed by another method. An example of special reasons might be a certificate regarding special pedagogical support from the disability coordinator of the university.

Other directives

It is primarily the student's responsibility to locate a suitable place for an internship, although the course responsible/examiner can assist in the process if necessary. Before the start of the internship, the place for the internship, the supervisor at the workplace, and the work plan must be approved by the examiner. A total of 15 credits Internship in Earth Science may be used in a degree in earth sciences.
