Entry requirements
180 credits including (1) 80 credits in physics and mathematics or (2) 70 credits in earth science and 45 credits in physics and mathematics. In both cases Continuum Mechanics in Geophysics, 5 credits, and Introduction to Seismology, 5 credits. Proficiency in English equivalent to the Swedish upper secondary course English 6.
Learning outcomes
On completion of the course, the student should be able to:
- Account for the physical principles of different passive seismic methods (analysis of ambient noise and surface waves, regional and teleseismic tomography, receiver functions and shear wave splitting) and the execution of the respective measurements.
- Account for how the Earth's internal structure can be derived from different seismological analyses on a regional scale
- Describe how models for the different seismological methods are parametrised.
- Apply and compare specific inverse methods and numerical tools for the implementation of these methods.
- Discuss and evaluate uncertainties and limitations in the resolution of different seismological methods.
Content
Ambient noise analysis, analysis of surface waves, tomographic methods, receiver functions, shear wave splitting. Interpretation of seismological models, their uncertainties and limitations, construction and parametrisation of seismological models, inverse methods.
Instruction
Lectures, problem solving, homework and seminar presentations.
Assessment
Written examination (2.5 credits), homework assignments (2 credits) and seminar (0.5 credits).
If there are special reasons for doing so, an examiner may make an exception from the method of assessment indicated and allow a student to be assessed by another method. An example of special reasons might be a certificate regarding special pedagogical support from the disability coordinator of the university.
