130 credits in science/engineering. Engineering Materials. Proficiency in English equivalent to the Swedish upper secondary course English 6.

Learning outcomes

On completion of the course, the student should be able to:

  • explain the principles of technically important surface treatment and surface coating methods,
  • explain the function, possibilities and limitations of the most common layers,
  • evaluate the properties of the layers with the most common analysis methods,
  • motivate choice of surface treatment and surface coating suitable for different product types and functional requirements,
  • carry out a systematic and rational choice of materials for a number of given construction and load situations.

Content

Classification of technologically important surface layers, their growth, adhesion and properties as well as application areas and functions. Brief method presentations: surface hardening methods, laser treatment, chemical surface conversion, electrolytic surface conversion, ion implantation, electrolytic coating, PVD, CVD, chemical coating, thermal spraying, hot dipping, explosion welding, etc. Systematic methodology for material selection for components and constructions where different types of loads and requirement profiles are taken into account.

Instruction

Lectures and group discussions.

Assessment

Written final report by group (2 credits), oral final group presentation of the project, active participation in other groups' presentations (l credit), plus individual oral defenses of your own groups written final report (2 credits).
