Licentiate Degree – checklist for defence and examination

The licentiate seminar can be used as a final goal of the programme or as a sub-goal in the studies towards a doctoral degree. A number of practical issues need to be addressed prior to the licentiate seminar. Here you will find an overview.

Responsible: Principal supervisor

  • The principal supervisor (in consultation with other supervisors and the professor in charge of doctoral studies), assesses when the thesis will be ready and appoints an external reviewer. The date is set in consultation between the licentiate student, the supervisor and the reviewer. The licentiate seminar may be held during the semester or the summer, though not during the period 15 June–15 August.

Responsible: Principal supervisor

  • The supervisor or the licentiate student books a venue for the seminar.

Responsible: Licentiate student

  • For a licentiate thesis, where licentiate degree is the final objective, the licentiate thesis should be published with open access in the University’s publishing platform at least three semester weeks before the licentiate seminar.
  • For licentiate thesis, where the licentiate seminar is a milestone for doctoral degree, there is no requirement to publish the thesis in the University’s publishing platform, but a final electronic version in the form of a pdf file or equivalent must be available and distributed at least three semester weeks before the licentiate seminar to the external reviewer and the examiner.
  • The period from 15 June up to and including 15 August may not be counted as part of the period of availability.
  • In both cases, a licentiate thesis must be available in physical form no later than the time of the seminar in at least four copies, of which:
    • one copy shall be available at the department's office (or equivalent),
    • one copy to the external reviewer,
    • one copy to the principal supervisor
    • one copy to the professor responsible for doctoral education.
  • No copies need to be submitted to the library.
  • The department may have its own rules about additional copies.
  • The licentiate student checks the information about the subject/specialisation in Ladok and the title of the qualification in the admission decision. Both the subject area and the specialisation are stated on the degree certificate. If a change in the title of the qualification (from teknologie to filosofie licentiatexamen or vice versa)* is desired, see the Faculty of Science and Technology Guidelines for doctoral (third-cycle) education.
  • The title of the degree is decided upon at the same time as the opponent and examining committee are appointed. For subjects/specializations that have both teknologie and filosofie degrees, the project should reflect the title.
  • If the licentiate student would like to change the degree title, review the guidelines for doctoral education at the faculty. If the nature of the project has changed so the subject/specialization of the doctoral education needs to be changed, the head of department decides on a change in conjuction with revision of the individual study plan. Use the form application to admission to doctoral studies.
  • If the licentiate student believe that the project reflects another degree title than for the subject decided on, the doctoral student can apply for a change of degree title to the faculty board. This should be done before decision on opponent and examining committee.
  • A notice that the licentiate seminar will be held must be published in the department's calendar (contact the webmaster of the department) and contain information on how the thesis can be obtained.

Responsible: Professor responsible for doctoral education

  • The licentiate student, the reviewer, the supervisor and the professor in charge of doctoral studies participate in the licentiate seminar.
  • The professor in charge of doctoral studies (or the person appointed by the professor as their substitute) is the examiner, after consultation with the principal supervisor and the reviewer.

Responsible: Principal supervisor

  • The principal supervisor reports in Ladok that the thesis has been passed for a licentiate degree and that all courses required for the licentiate degree have been completed (a 2-credit course in research ethics is compulsory for a licentiate degree).
  • Read more about required courses.
  • The principle supervisor is responsible for that a passes licentiate seminar is reported to the department administration. The department reports the licentiate seminar in Ladok. Protocol from the seminar is archived at the department.

Responsible: Licentiate student

  • The licentiate student applies to the Graduation Office for a degree certificate. Before applying for a degree certificate, it is important that the doctoral student enters Ladok and changes to his/her private e-mail address since only digital certificates are awarded.
  • There are many degree titles to choose from in Ladok, a tip is to search for "Technology" and then choose an applicative degree.
