Functions in DiVA

DiVA's main purpose is to collect and make research publications and other material published by the 50 member organizations available. In addition, there are a number of other functions and services in the system described below.

Publication data from DiVA is reused in other databases and search services, both nationally and internationally. Examples of such services are the National Library's search services SwePub, Libris and Uppsök (uppsatser.se) as well as the international search services BASE and OpenAire. Publications and bibliographic information in DiVA are also indexed by Google and other search engines, which contributes to increased visibility and download frequency.

Project information

Since 2018, it is possible to add project information to DiVA, either by importing project records from the Swedish Research Council's database SweCris or by manually adding information about local projects. In DiVA, a link can also be made between the project and its publications. The function for adding project information to DiVA is optional and must be activated by the member.

Personal records/authority records

A personal record is a so-called authority record for an author or other contributor. The purpose of using personal records in DiVA is to facilitate the identification of an author or other contributor and thereby make a person's entire production searchable in a better way. In the authority record, various name forms can be handled, such as change of surname or historical changes regarding a person's organizational or institutional affiliation. The ability to add different name forms with identifiers such as local ID or ORCID also makes it easier to distinguish authors with common names.

The authority record also includes an author page in DiVA where a person's various name forms, affiliation history and publications are displayed. This page also shows the ORCID number and it is possible to add links to external web pages, i.e. profile pages at the organization. It is also possible to add a shorter biography.

Digital archiving

There is support for retrieving digital files, via so-called archive package in METS format, to an authenticated e-archive for further long-term archiving. Special adjustments have been made in DiVA to also handle failed or confidential work.

Persistent links (URN:NBN)

When registering in DiVA, all publications are provided with a persistent identifier in the form of a URN:NBN, a solution provided by the National Library. This means that all publications are provided with persistent links and can be accessed via the national reference service. URN stands for Uniform Resource Name and NBN for National Bibliographic Number.

Link to external web shop

It is possible to link individual publications to an external web shop or other external website, where orders of printed editions of publications can be handled. In DiVA, this link is displayed in the form of a shopping cart symbol. The linking is done through so-called order profiles in DiVA. However, there is no payment or ordering function built into the system.

E-posting

DiVA supports so-called "e-posting", ie. digital posting of dissertations via the web instead of, or as a complement to, the printed notification of submission. When a dissertation is "e-posted" via DiVA, it is published and made openly available to the public. For all higher education institutions, it is also possible to create an automatic list of upcoming dissertations such as a website and RSS feed.

Legal deposit

DiVA provides support for legal deposit of electronic material to the National Library (KB). The delivery takes place by KB retrieving full texts and metadata from DiVA according to an established specification. This functionality is an active option that each member decides on.
