On Campus Gotland in Visby

If you are interested in archaeology, Gotland is an amazing place for your studies. Campus Gotland is located at the centre, by the ocean in Visby. Outside the well-preserved medieval town, a UNESCO World Heritage, is the grandiose Gotlandic cultural landscape with its rich ancient remains from all ages.
In relation to its size, Gotland has double the amount of ancient remains than any other county in Sweden, housing extensive burial- and settlement remains, large Bronze Age mounds, unique stone house foundations from the Iron Age, over 90 medieval churches and 200 medieval stone houses. In addition, we have many world-famous silver hoards from the Viking Age.
Unique conditions of preservation means that bones and skeletons are well preserved, meaning that we can also study humans and animals from prehistory and the environment in which they lived.
All this means that Gotland's prehistory and Middle Ages have been a magnet for a number of great archaeologists who have lived and worked on the island, among them many Uppsala professors and Sweden's first female professor of Archaeology, Greta Arwidsson. Gotland is one of the best archaeologically researched areas in the Nordic countries.
You too can study archaeology in this legendary archaeology environment! In a friendly small campus teachers and researchers are close by for teaching, tutoring and supervising. Here you may study our BA programme in Archaeology and Ancient History focussing on either aÁrchaeology or Osteology (the study of bones) and also continue a further one or two years, working towards a Master's exam. We also offer shorter courses, and most summers we have extra field courses with excavations. Accommodation during term time is usually not a problem.
Many people wonder what there is to do in Gotland during the winter. When you have spent a winter here, you will know that there is no lack of activities. The different student associations, as the campus-wide Rindi and the archaeology association Gotark arrange many events for students, such as pub nighhts, dinners, culture and sports activities. In addition, the island has a rich life of culture and sports, open to all on the island. Despite its relatively small sise, c. 25 000 inhabitants, Visby has an extensive offer of shops and night life, comparable to larger ities on the mainland. with c. 30 pizza places, restaurants, clubs and pubs open all year round there is variety. Many students who have begun studying in Visby would prefer not to leave, but if you do, for a short time, perhaps, there are excellent communications with the mainland. Several flights a day leave for Stockholm/Uppsala and daily ferries to Nynäshamn and Oskarshamn.
