“Sweden’s role in climate policy has weakened”
On 10-21 November, the countries of the world will come together at the Climate Change Conference COP30 in Brazil. The role of the EU and Sweden has significantly weakened compared to previous years. At the same time, new research shows that there is strong support for climate action in Sweden. This is according to Mikael Karlsson, researcher in Climate Change Leadership at Uppsala University.

“Sweden, which has been a global environmental role model, is now one of the EU countries with the highest increase in emissions,” says Mikael Karlsson.
School children invited to contribute to climate research
During one year, starting summer of 2025, school students from all over Sweden are invited to contribute to Uppsala University's climate research through the citizen science project Kallt och svettigt (Cold and Sweaty). For one year, students from fourth to ninth grade will measure temperatures and interview adults around them about how they experience the temperature. A total of 250 school classes will be able to contribute to the project.

Support for meat rationing to protect climate
Rationing of goods such as meat and fuel can both effectively and fairly reduce consumption with high climate impact. Almost 40 percent of the public say they could accept such measures. These are the findings of new research from the Climate Change Leadership Group at Uppsala University.

From pollen analysis to sustainable future
The climate and the environment are among the very most vital issues of our time, yet humanity has confronted the challenges we face today in the past as well. By studying archaeology and global environmental history we can gain perspective and learn from previous generations.

How people relate to climate change
How is climate change being addressed in different parts of the world? For a couple of years now, the C-URGE project has been running, in which anthropologists explore how people relate to the urgency of global warming.

Global climate policy in focus for visiting professors
Promoting common interests in global climate policy and governance, including issues of accountability and climate justice, is the focus of Aarti Gupta and Frank Biermann, visiting professors in climate leadership at Uppsala University. Their work emphasises that researchers need to engage more actively in public debate and that political systems must change if we are to effectively address and manage the major climate challenges we face.

Buried carbon at the shore
Lake shores with a lot of reeds and other vegetation may not be tempting for swimmers. However, Sebastian Sobek and his colleagues have discovered that such environments can be important for the climate. Littoral zones store carbon that would otherwise seep into the atmosphere and contribute to global warming.

Increased access to water a threat to nomadic farmers
Increasing access to water in extremely arid parts of sub-Saharan Africa can help nomadic livestock farmers in the short term. However, in the long run it may lead to serious consequences for their livelihoods. This is shown by research from Uppsala University, published in Nature Climate Change.

“We’ve seen a lot of backsliding on climate commitments”
This year marks the 10th anniversary of the Paris Agreement. At that time, the countries of the world agreed that global warming should be kept well below two degrees, and preferably not exceed 1.5 degrees. At the climate conference in Brazil, countries are now set to present even more ambitious national commitments. Ultimately, it is a matter of the survival of the Paris Agreement, according to Charles Parker, Professor of Political Science.

The COP30 climate conference is taking place in Belém, Brazil.
