Three research initiatives at Uppsala University – Urban Lab, Uppsala Immigration Lab, and the Centre for Health Economic Research – recently gathered for the first time in a joint workshop. Over 40 researchers from various disciplines, including human geography, economic history, and economics, participated in the two-day workshop held at Stora Brännbo Hotel in Sigtuna.

Uppsala Immigration Lab (UIL), led by Professor Olof Åslund, conducts research on migration and labor market issues, areas where knowledge gaps remain significant. The Centre for Health Economic Research (HEFUU), under the leadership of Professor Erik Grönqvist, focuses on how improved and more equitably distributed health in the population can be achieved.

– It was incredibly rewarding to bring all three research environments together in a joint workshop, and it is inspiring to see the exciting research being conducted, says Matz Dahlberg, Director of Urban Lab.

The program covered a wide range of topics, including differences in life expectancy between residential areas, the long-term health effects of industrial pollution, how election information in different languages influences voter turnout, the effects of automatic preschool placement offers on preschool attendance, and how extended home visits impact access to child healthcare.

– The three research environments share overlapping themes and research areas, and many researchers work across multiple initiatives. It is therefore both natural and essential to come together to discuss research and exchange ideas. We hope to make this a regular event, says Matz Dahlberg.
