Interdisciplinary Centre for Women’s Health over the Lifecourse
at the intersection of reproductive transitions, mental health and pain
WHOLE (Interdisciplinary Centre for Women’s Health Over the LifecoursE) is a long-term interdisciplinary research centre dedicated to improving women’s health from a life-course perspective, focusing on the intersection of reproductive transitions, mental health, and pain.
Led by Professor Alkistis Skalkidou at Uppsala University, in close collaboration with Karolinska Institutet, WHOLE brings together researchers from 17 disciplines across medicine, technology, social sciences, and the humanities.
The centre focuses on conditions such as endometriosis, menstrual-related disorders, perinatal depression, childbirth-related pain, and menopause-related health challenges, areas that have long been under-recognized and under-treated in healthcare.

By connecting research, healthcare, education, and society, WHOLE aims to create new knowledge and innovative care models, and to have lasting societal impact.
