WOMHER’s founders publish new book on women’s mental health

On September 1, the anthology Women's Mental Health – An Interdisciplinary Perspective will be published by Natur & Kultur. The book is the result of many years of research and collaboration between experts in medicine, reproductive health, psychology, and social sciences – with a strong foundation at Uppsala University.

Among the contributors to the book are Lisa Ekselius, Senior Professor of Psychiatry, and Agneta Skoog Svanberg, Professor Emerita of Reproductive Health – both affiliated with Uppsala University and co-founders of WOMHER, Uppsala University's Center for Women's Mental Health.

A Lifespan Perspective on Mental Health

How do hormones affect women's mental health? What happens during the transition into menopause? How is mental wellbeing influenced by pregnancy, miscarriage, or involuntary childlessness? And do women's hearts function differently?

This book provides answers to these questions and many more. It offers knowledge, insight, and practical skills for professionals who support women in healthcare, social services, or protective environments—and also serves as course literature for midwifery, nursing, psychology, social work, and medical programs.

The anthology highlights common health challenges affecting women, such as exhaustion syndrome, chronic pain, and the consequences of cancer treatment. It also addresses women's living conditions in relation to work, exposure to violence, and migration.

– One of the book’s main goals is to foster a positive outlook and present opportunities for maintaining and regaining mental and physical health, says Lisa Ekselius.
