Biography
I am a literature specialist with a Ph.D. in Slavic Languages and Literatures from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor (2000).
As a researcher and teacher, I am particularly interested in the ways literature engages with memories of historical experience and offers new perspectives on contemporary society.
Research
My research specializes in Central and Eastern European literatures from the twentieth and twenty‑first centuries, with a particular focus on literary multilingualism and cultural memory. I also work within the field of translation studies.
In my research, I study how life in authoritarian societies is depicted in literary works from Eastern and Central Europe. I have also explored how migration and multilingualism are expressed in novels, memoirs, essays, and poetry.
The Russian Federation’s invasion of Ukraine has highlighted the importance of confronting the human rights abuses and colonial oppression of the Soviet era. Literature contributes to this process by depicting the past and examining ethical questions. I am currently investigating how Russian authors address issues of guilt and responsibility in essays written since 2022.
In addition, I conduct research on the Russian‑Georgian‑French writer Ilia Zdanevich’s experimental works from the early twentieth century, which shed new light on Russian imperialism.
In 2026, I am carrying out a pedagogical development project that examines how we can best support students’ reading within humanities higher education in today’s digitalized society.
