Short presentation
Professor June 2021 Uppsala University. Senior surgeon in ENT 1999, PhD in 1997 and Ass Prof 2011 KI. Lecturer 2017 UU, responsible for ENT at T8 medical education and T2 speech therapist education. The main research is Obstructive sleep apnea, over 50 original papers. Principal supervisor for 7 doctoral students; 6 completed, and 1 by 2023 at UU. The research group performs 5 randomized controlled trials of pharyngeal surgery in adults and children, and Biobanks tonsils wtih flowcytometry.

Leder en forskningsgrupp med fem postdocs på Karolinska Institutet och en på Uppsala Universitet. Vi bedriver bl.a. RCT på vuxna och barn med obstruktiv sömnapné (OSA), avseende olika svalgkirurgiska metoder. OSA är en folksjukdom med allvarliga följder om obehandlad. Standard-behandling på vuxna är övertrycksmask (CPAP) eller apnétandskena. Det är dock bara hälften av patienterna som tolererar dessa och det är många patienter som lämnas obehandlade om inte kirurgi kan erbjudas. Vi jämför med standardbehandling tonsillektomi, och jämför resultaten med antingen ingen behandling eller en konservativ svalgplastik på kort och lång sikt. Vi mäter förändring i antal andningsuppehåll per sömntimme med gold standard polysomnografi, samt livskvalitet med validerade enkäter. Vi har med våra studier kunnat visa att svalgkirurgi och tonsillektomi är effektivt, förbättrar symtomen som trötthet, livskvalitet m.m. Likaså på små barn har vi visat att tonsillektomi bör erbjudas till de med måttliga till allvarliga OSA-besvär, medan de med mild OSA och milda symtom kan vänta med operation. Vi har en Biobank med tonsiller från vuxna och barn.
