Research

I am a Senior Lecturer at the Department of Medical Sciences, Uppsala University, with a joint appointment at Uppsala University Hospital in Clinical Chemistry, and I am an Associate Professor in Experimental Clinical Chemistry. My research focuses on extracellular vesicles (EVs) as circulating biomarkers in inflammation, barrier dysfunction, and systemic disease, with an emphasis on method development and clinical translation. A central part of my work is the development of flow cytometry–based methods for EV analysis in frozen plasma, enabling retrospective studies and providing a platform for broad collaborations.

My research spans thrombosis and vascular biology (including endothelial- and platelet-derived EVs in cardiovascular disease and coagulation disorders), immunomedicine (e.g., SLE and vasculitis), and neuroinflammation and blood–brain barrier involvement in stress-related exhaustion and post-COVID. In recent years, I have also developed tissue-specific EV analyses, including brain- and lung-derived vesicles, and im involved in translational projects in paediatric oncology, gynaecological oncology, and environmental and airway exposures. I have published original research in the field and actively participate in externally funded collaborations and the supervision of clinical PhD students, with the overarching goal of standardising EV analysis and bringing EV-based diagnostics closer to clinical implementation.
