The Uppsala Research Centre for the World in the Viking Age (WiVA)
The Viking Age has long played an important role in the Nordic countries when it comes to issues of identity, culture, and emotions, but the fascination with this era is also a global phenomenon. At the same time, ‘vikings’ have been distorted into stereotypes and become subjects of political misuse to such an extent that they can barely be recognized. It is now more urgent than ever to convey nuanced interpretations both within academia and to the general public. At the heart of the WiVA center’s activities is a focus on the extensive ethnic and cultural diversity of the Viking world.

The Center for the Human Past
The center is administered by the Department of Organism Biology, and some of our researchers contribute research time. The Center for the Human Past (CHP) aims to bridge the three disciplines of archaeology, genetics, and linguistics that explore the shared history of the world’s populations over the last 10,000 years.
