Contract aducation QGIS

The Department of Archeology and Ancient History, Uppsala University, offers since 2023 an annually recurring assignment training in QGIS for archaeologists. The course is aimed at professional archaeologists in Sweden with previous experience with GIS and who want to learn QGIS.

QGIS is continuously developed and has become an increasingly complete and powerful tool for managing analyses, visualizing and presenting geodata, with functions to work with scripts, models, relational databases and to connect directly to servers. The program has many practical functions that are easy to get started and use. QGIS is open source and costs nothing to use.

During the course, basic functions in QGIS such as visualization, georeferencing, analyzes and layout are presented. We also investigate a number of more complex methods, specifically suitable for archaeological GIS, based on the Swedigarch Geotools plugin. The goal is for all participants to be able to work with QGIS for archaeological work immediately after the course, but also to have gained insight and inspiration to test more advanced applications.

The course days have an emphasis on own work in QGIS with the support of teachers, as well as theoretical reviews of concepts and other things that are good to know. It is possible to participate in the course without previous experience of GIS, but then it is desirable to have good computer skills.

The course takes place over two full days on site in Engelska Parken. The next course opportunity is February 6 to 7, 2025. If you are interested in participating from your organization, please send a non-binding expression of interest to helena.hulth@arkeologi.uu.se as soon as possible, as the number of participants is limited.
