Uppsala Lecture in Housing and Urban Research: Can cities control the rise of short-term rentals?

What happens to cities and housing markets when homes are increasingly used as short-term rentals through digital platforms such as Airbnb? And what can local governments do to regulate them? Across Europe, the growth of short-term rental platforms has sparked debates about housing availability and affordability, tourism, neighbourhood change and the right to use and profit from residential property.

Claire Colomb is Professor of Land Economy at the University of Cambridge. Her research focuses on urban and regional planning, urban governance and politics, and conflicts surrounding the use and regulation of urban space. Drawing on her recent book Housing under Platform Capitalism (co-authored with T. Aguilera and F. Artioli), this lecture compares the regulation of short-term rentals in 12 major
European cities.
