Subject areas
The Department of Linguistics and Philology is one of four departments in the Faculty of Languages. The department conducts research and education in the following subject areas.
- Asian languages and cultures: Indology, Iranian languages, Comparative Indo-European linguistics, Chinese (Sinology), Semitic languages, and Turkic languages.
- The classical languages of Europe: Greek, including Byzantine studies, and Latin.
- General and applied linguistics: General Linguistics (including Swahili) and Computational Linguistics (Language Technology).


In brief
Almost 70 people are employed at the department, among them 15 professors, 13 assistant/associate professors, about 10 researchers and postdocs, 3 lecturers and about 20 doctoral students. The department's total budget for 2025 is approximately SEK 91 million in revenue. Approximately SEK 59 million relates to research and education at doctoral level and SEK 31 million goes to education at undergraduate and advanced level. The department is home to about twenty externally funded research projects.
