Subject areas
The Department of Linguistics and Philology is one of four departments in the Faculty of Languages. The department conducts research and offers education in the following subject areas:
- Asian languages and cultures: Indology, Iranian languages, Comparative Indo-European linguistics, Chinese (Sinology), Semitic languages, and Turkic languages.
- The classical languages of Europe: Greek, including Byzantine studies, and Latin.
- General and applied linguistics: General Linguistics (including Swahili) and Computational Linguistics (Language Technology).


In brief
The department is home to more than 70 staff members, including 16 professors, 12 associate and assistant professors, around 10 researchers and postdocs, 3 lecturers, and some 25 doctoral students. In 2025, the department’s budget amounts to approximately SEK 91 million, with about SEK 59 million allocated to research and doctoral education and SEK 31 million to undergraduate and advanced-level teaching. The research involves some 20 research projects funded by external partners.
