Subject areas
The Department of Linguistics and Philology is one of four departments in the Faculty of Languages. The department conducts research and education in the following subject areas.
- Asian languages and cultures: Assyriology, Indology, Iranian languages, Comparative Indo-European linguistics, Chinese (Sinology), Semitic languages, and Turkic languages.
- The classical languages of Europe: Greek, including Byzantine studies, and Latin.
- General and applied linguistics: General Linguistics (including Swahili) and Computational Linguistics (Language Technology).
In brief
Almost 80 people are employed at the department, including 17 professors, 13 senior lecturers, about 10 researchers and postdocs, about 5 lecturers and 23 doctoral students. The department is home to some twenty externally funded research projects. The department's total budget for 2024 is SEK 87 million, of which approximately SEK 30 million goes to first- and second-cycle education and SEK 57 million to research and third-cycle education.
