Title: Moduli of Riemann surfaces in number theory
Abstract: Since the 19th century, mathematicians have studied the moduli theory of Riemann surfaces — the study of how Riemann surfaces can vary in families, and how their complex structure may be deformed. I will describe some highlights of this subject, and then move on to a more modern circle of ideas: using the topological and homotopical study of moduli spaces to prove function field analogues of "statistical" conjectures about number fields (following e.g. Ellenberg, Venkatesh, Westerland, Landesman, Levy, and work of myself with Bergström, Diaconu, Westerland, Miller, Patzt, and Randal-Williams).
