PhD Education
Research training in the field of pharmaceuticals
The PhD studies at the country's only pharmaceutical faculty are conducted in a range of areas from early phases where drug candidates are identified to the clinical use of registered products. With a PhD from Uppsala University, you have many opportunities to pursue a career in academia, the pharmaceutical industry, and government agencies after graduation.
The Faculty of Pharmacy together with the Faculty of Medicine constitutes the Disciplinary Domain of Medicine and Pharmacy - a domain with shared responsibility for PhD studies and unique conditions for successful pharmaceutical research. Our goal is to provide first-class PhD education and to train doctoral students so that they can make a significant contribution to pharmaceutical research in the future. Research collaboration with the international pharmaceutical industry and with other parts of the healthcare sector ensures high quality.
The Faculty conducts PhD studies in the subject of Pharmaceutical Science.
Our PhD research groups include Pharmaceutical Cell Biology, Pharmacognosy, Pharmaceutical Bioinformatics, Pharmacology and Biological Addiction Research, Pharmacology, Drug Technology, Imaging Mass Spectrometry, Pharmaceutical Physics, Biopharmaceutics, and Drug Safety and Toxicology.

The PhD program corresponds to four years of full-time studies and includes individual research at one of the department's research groups as well as at least 20 weeks of courses. The doctoral students regularly participate in research schools, PhD courses, and international scientific conferences. International collaboration within the PhD program is strengthened through The European University Consortium for Pharmaceutical Research, ULLA, which includes the pharmaceutical faculties in Uppsala, London, Leiden, Amsterdam, Copenhagen, Parma, Leuven, and Paris. Every other year, a European summer research school, ULLA Summer School, is organized for all doctoral students at these faculties.
