Bart Streumer, University of Groningen: "How to Be a Self-Effacing Consequentializing Quasi-Realist"
Abstract
Consequentialists often argue that their view is partly self-effacing or that their opponents’ views are themselves versions of consequentialism. These arguments resemble the quasi-realist moves that many expressivists make. I will show, however, that consequentialists who argue in this way assume that realism is true. I will then show that their arguments can be made compatible with expressivism by taking expressivists’ quasi-realist moves much further than they are normally taken. This will also strengthen the resemblance to self-effacement.
