The Department of Surgical Sciences provides high quality doctoral education in a wide range of topics related to surgery. We have about 220 doctoral students affiliated with the department. The doctoral education is mainly conducted at Uppsala University Hospital. We also have doctoral students stationed in various centers for clinical research.

By independently (under supervision) conducting a research project, you as a doctoral student utilize and develop both your practical and theoretical skills. You will learn the latest methods in modern research and the scientific environment provides good opportunities for both deepening and broadening. The aim is for you to become an independent researcher, ready for highly skilled work, whether in academia, industry, healthcare or government.

Each doctoral student has his or her own doctoral training, depending on the research project. The doctoral program also includes courses and the writing of a doctoral or licentiate thesis.
