Celebrate Linnaeus’s birthday with us! Travel between past, present, and future. The 18th century comes to life through clothing and dance. Beautiful crafts reflect both traditional and modern techniques. Play “one-card Knave” and board games, go on a treasure hunt, and experiment – gather knowledge for the future. Learn more about bees, honey, evolution, pollination, and medicinal plants.

Open house with the Linnaeus family

The Linnaeus Museum is located in the house that was once Carl Linnaeus’s home—a place for research, education, and private life. Objects, furniture, wallpapers, and portraits tell the story of Linnaeus’s time and life. The museum admits 30 visitors at a time, so waiting times may occur.

Linnaeus’ Botanical Garden

Experience Linnaeus’s garden in early bloom, set in a festive atmosphere. Join guided tours of the plants Linnaeus cultivated. Learn more about the history of the garden.

18th-Century Celebration and Craft Market

What was it like to live in Linnaeus’s time? The society Gustafs Skål and the dance groups Branicula and Grevinnan Brahe bring the 18th century to life through board games, dance, and costume displays.

Sale of 18th-century–themed products. At the market you can buy everything from cheeses to beautiful jewellery and glassware. Watch artisans spin yarn and practice bobbin lace-making. Get information about associations, parks, gardens, and excursion destinations.

Linnaeus’s Research Corners

This year we have two research corners: one immediately to the left as you enter the garden and one at the far end to the right. Welcome to learn more about botany, molecular biology, evolution, and medicines provided by nature!

Botany and Evolution

Bring the children on an interactive journey with hands-on experiments and games. Let them explore some basic concepts in botany and molecular biology. Experiment with plant pigments and learn about seed germination and evolution! Prizes for those who excel in plant knowledge.

Pharmacognosy: Medicines Provided by Nature

Nature, in various forms, is the basis for many of our medicines. In Linnaeus’s time, plants were the main raw material, which he described in his book Materia Medica. What is less widely known is that plants (and some animals) still account for a large share of modern medicines—this is the core of pharmacognosy. We demonstrate natural compounds and their use as medicines.

Linnaean Trails and Spring Flowers

In his time, Linnaeus was incredibly popular as an inspirer in the natural world. Follow in his footsteps. Get help finding your way to Uppsala’s Linnaean Trails and other excursion destinations in the nature of Uppland!

Test your knowledge of some common spring flowers. Treasure hunt for younger visitors. Borrow a map and search for clues in the Linnaeus Garden. Solve the password and win a small prize. Biotopia’s tent.

The Cultural History of the Honeybee – Beekeeping in Sweden Then and Now

Learn about different bee breeds in Sweden and their products (in addition to honey, also pollen and beeswax) – taste them and get fun tips on how to use them. Meet beekeepers who will tell you about the most common cultivated bee. By the pond in the garden.

Carl Peter Thunberg – Plants, Animals, and Everything in Between

The “Japanese Linnaeus.” The father of South African botany. Linnaeus’s student Carl Peter Thunberg has many nicknames—but who was he? And what legacy did he leave behind? A small exhibition about Thunberg’s life and achievements. In the Orangery.

Food and Drink

Café Carl von Linné has a lovely outdoor seating area at Svartbäcksgatan 27 B, adjacent to the visitor pavilion in the Linnaeus Garden. There is also a wide selection of cafés and restaurants in the area surrounding the garden.

Getting There

Near the Linnaeus Garden there are bus stops for both city buses (stop: Stadsbiblioteket) and regional buses (stop: Skolgatan). For more information, see www.ul.se.

Walking distance to Uppsala Central Station(Resecentrum), approximately 600 metres.
