Four top researchers at Uppsala University to receive ERC Starting Grants

The European Research Council (ERC) has now publicised which researchers have been awarded 2017 ERC Starting Grants. 406 research projects across the EU get a total of EUR 605 million. Four of the 16 grants awarded to Swedish higher education institutions go to researchers at Uppsala University.
ERC Starting Grants are for researchers at the beginning of their career (2–7 years after completing their PhD) who want to establish themselves as leading researchers in Europe.
“Top talent needs good conditions at the right time to thrive. The EU provides the best possible conditions at the early stages of a researcher’s career through the ERC Starting Grants. That’s why this funding is so crucial for the future of Europe as science hub: it keeps and attracts young talent. It’s an investment that will pay off, boosting the EU’s growth and innovation,” says Carlos Moedas, European Commissioner for Research, Science and Innovation.
Out of the 3085 applications in total for 2017, 406 projects across 23 countries were funded with up to EUR 1.5 million each. The 2017 ERC Starting Grants by domain:
- 118 grants in life sciences
- 177 grants in physical sciences and engineering
- 111 grants in social sciences and humanities
16 of the grants have been awarded researchers at Swedish higher education institutions. Four of these go to researchers at Uppsala University – all in science and technology:
- Annica Black-Schaffer, Department of Physics and Astronomy, Materials Theory: New mechanisms and materials for odd-frequency superconductivity
- Adrian Kantian, Department of Physics and Astronomy, Materials Theory: D-electrons coupled to dissipation: a novel approach for understanding and engineering superconducting materials and devices
- Carina Schlebusch, Department of Organismal Biology, Evolution and Developmental Biology: The African Neolithic: A genetic perspective
- Maria Tenje, Department of Engineering Sciences, Division of Microsystems Technology: Sophisticated 3D cell culture scaffolds for Next Generation Barrier-on-chip In vitro models
