Freedom

No matter how important it is that our way of thinking is right, we need to be able to think freely. It was free research that led to a vaccine against COVID-19, soon to be rewarded with the Nobel Prize. The pandemic also brought the question of what freedom really is to the fore – the absence of coercion or being able to do what we really want?

Controversial quote

The words are engraved in golden letters above the entrance to the Grand Auditorium in the University Main Building in Uppsala: “To think freely is great, to think rightly is greater”. The maxim is a quote from Thomas Thorild, who studied in Uppsala in the 18th century – a provocative and controversial thinker who stirred debate in his day.
