Conservation and production

Conservation and Production is a research programme within UUniCORN that examines how societies can reconcile biodiversity conservation with the growing demands for food, forest products, energy, and other ecosystem services. Through interdisciplinary research spanning governance, land-use change, ecological resilience, and sustainability transformations, the programme explores pathways towards multifunctional landscapes that support both nature and human well-being.

About

Human societies depend on landscapes for food, energy, raw materials, livelihoods, and recreation. At the same time, biodiversity is declining globally, ecosystems are under increasing pressure, and climate change is amplifying existing environmental challenges. These developments create complex goal conflicts between conservation and production that cannot be addressed within individual sectors alone.

The Conservation and Production programme investigates how these conflicts emerge, how they are governed, and how they can be transformed into opportunities for more sustainable and resilient landscape management. We focus particularly on forests, agricultural systems, and other production landscapes where multiple societal objectives must be balanced simultaneously.

Our research combines ecological, social, governance, and policy perspectives to understand how biodiversity conservation, climate adaptation, ecosystem services, and resource production can be integrated across scales and sectors. The programme contributes knowledge that supports evidence-based decision-making and helps develop pathways towards multifunctional landscapes that are ecologically resilient, economically viable, and socially just.

Structure

The programme consists of three interconnected research components that address conservation–production challenges from complementary perspectives:

  1. Nature-Based Solutions

This research component examines how Nature-based Solutions can help address societal challenges while supporting biodiversity and ecosystem health. We investigate opportunities and barriers for scaling up the implementation of Nature-based Solutions across sectors and landscapes, with a focus on governance, policy, and practical implementation.

  1. Forest Adaptation and Resilience

This component explores how forest ecosystems can be adapted to climate change while maintaining biodiversity, ecosystem functions, and productive capacity. Through projects such as ANAFOR, we investigate ecological, social, and governance dimensions of innovative adaptation strategies, including assisted migration and other approaches that strengthen the resilience of forest landscapes.

  1. Land-Use Transitions

This component investigates how transitions in land use and land management can contribute to sustainability goals while balancing competing demands on landscapes. Research focuses on alternative forest management systems, multifunctional forestry, social learning, stakeholder engagement, and governance processes that enable transformative change in production landscapes.
