WISE Research Master Thesis at Uppsala University

Are you starting your final year on a Master of Science in Engineering programme or a Master’s programme in technology or natural sciences? Through the WISE Research Master’s Thesis Programme, you can receive a scholarship, become part of a research group and carry out your Master’s thesis in a strong research environment focused on sustainable materials. The programme is aimed at students who are interested in doctoral studies and want early insight into research linked to the sustainable innovations of the future.

WISE, the Wallenberg Initiative Materials Science for Sustainability, is Sweden’s largest initiative in materials science and brings together leading universities and research groups from across the country. Its vision is a sustainable future through new knowledge and new materials. Through the WISE Research Master’s Thesis Programme, selected students can receive a scholarship of SEK 75,000 to carry out their Master’s thesis in a WISE-affiliated research group.

As a WISE Scholar, you will be introduced to the research environment during the autumn semester 2026 and are expected to take part in relevant activities, such as seminars and journal clubs. Initial contact between the scholar and the research group will be established before the summer, when a preliminary plan will be drawn up. A more detailed plan will be developed at the beginning of the autumn semester.

If there is room within your study programme, you may also take a project course or literature study course connected to the project during the autumn semester. Normally, the 30-credit Master’s thesis will be carried out during the spring semester 2027, with supervision from the relevant research group.

Find a project that matches your interests in the list of projects submitted by the research groups.

Alternatively, develop your own project together with a researcher and research group, within WISE’s thematic areas.

Step 2: Submit your application

Prepare:

Motivation explaining why you wish to become a WISE Scholar, approximately 200 words.

Description of the project you wish to work on, approximately 200 words.

CV, maximum 2 pages.

Study merits, that is, an extract from Ladok showing completed courses and grades.

Then submit your application via this form no later than 22 May.

Step 3: Assessment and eligibility

Applications will be assessed by an assessment group appointed by the faculty. The results will be announced in June 2026.

You are responsible for ensuring that you meet the eligibility requirements for the Master’s thesis course within your programme and for applying to the course according to your programme’s instructions.

Target group

The WISE Research Master’s Thesis Programme is a research-preparatory programme aimed at students in the fourth year of a Master of Science in Engineering programme and first-year Master’s students in technology or natural sciences. The aim is to provide students with the opportunity to develop their interest in research in materials science for sustainability.

Structure for awarded scholars

Scholars are expected to take part in relevant activities within the research group during the autumn semester, such as journal clubs and seminars. Initial contact between the scholar and the research group is established before the summer, when a preliminary plan is developed. A more detailed plan is then prepared at the beginning of the autumn semester.

In most cases, the 30-credit Master’s thesis is carried out during the spring semester with supervision from the relevant research group. It is also possible to undertake a longer project, which would then begin during the autumn semester. For the Master’s thesis, students are expected to develop a project plan during the autumn in consultation with the research group. The supervisor is responsible for ensuring that the thesis is relevant to WISE in terms of content. Otherwise, the work follows the regulations of the respective study programme.
