Swedish research funding

In Sweden, research is funded by government agencies, public foundations and private financiers.

Brief information on a selection of major Swedish research funding bodies is provided below, along with links to web pages with additional information about their activities and current calls.

Note that some of these calls require administration by the Research Support.

  • The Swedish Research Council is a government research funding body that funds research and research infrastructure in the university and higher education sector. The Swedish Research Council awards funding to research of the highest scientific quality in all disciplinary research domains.
  • Formas is a government research council for sustainable development, funding research within environment, agricultural sciences and spatial planning.
  • Forte is a government research funding body that funds research on working life, social and public health.
  • Vinnova is Sweden’s innovation authority with the mission of promoting sustainable growth by improving conditions for innovation and by funding needs-driven research.
  • The Wallenberg Foundations grant funding to excellent researchers and research projects beneficial to Sweden. Note that the foundations require higher institution prioritization of submitted applications. Therefore, these applications require administration by the Research Support.
  • The Swedish Foundation for Strategic Research supports research in science, engineering and medicine. The foundation promotes the development of strong research environments of the highest international class with significance for the development of Sweden’s future competitiveness.
  • MISTRA supports research of strategic significance for a good living environment. The research should significantly contribute to solving key environmental problems and to environmentally sound societal developments. The foundation promotes the development of strong research environments of the highest international standing that are important for Sweden’s future competitiveness.
  • The Swedish Energy Agency supports research and innovation in the area of energy. New technology and innovations will contribute to the attainment of Sweden’s energy and climate goals.
  • The Ragnar Söderberg Foundation (in Swedish only) is a private research funding body that supports research primarily in medicine, economics and the legal sciences.
  • The Torsten Söderberg Foundation (in Swedish only) is a private research funding body that supports research primarily in medicine, economics and the legal sciences.
  • Riksbankens Jubileumsfond (RJ) is an independent foundation with the goal of promoting and supporting research in the humanities and social sciences.
  • The Swedish Cancer Society is an independent non-profit organisation that works for a higher survival rate and a reduction in the incidence of cancer. Researchers and healthcare professionals can apply for grants or scholarships from the Swedish Cancer Society.
  • The Göran Gustafsson Foundation (UU/KTH) promotes primarily pure research in engineering physics and medicine and is aimed at younger researchers.
  • Olle Engkvist's Foundation (in Swedish only) supports research in medicine, technology, natural science, and humanities.
