5.5 million awarded in first call for applications

Support for the development of cross-disciplinary research projects was UUniFI's first call for applications
Twenty-two groups of researchers have been awarded project development funding as Uppsala University's Future Institutes, UUniFI, concluded their first call for applications — more than originally planned.
Forty-eight applications were received for this spring's call for project development funding from Uppsala University's Future Institutes, UUniFI. Twenty-two groups have now been selected for the portfolio.
The selected projects represent all of the university's academic domains and involve researchers from 21 departments at Uppsala University, one at Karolinska Institutet and one at the University of Oxford. Participants will have access to a support programme including seminars and personal mentorship. In addition, approximately 5.5 million Swedish kronor will be distributed to the applicant departments, to be used in part for salary costs.
"The expert review process naturally led to a scientifically broad selection of research ideas. I believe the researchers in this group will have a really interesting autumn as they begin working together on their projects and applications to external funders," says Claes-Fredrik Helgesson, Director of UUniFI Circus, which leads the support programme.
The aim is to increase the success rate for external funding of interdisciplinary projects involving Uppsala University researchers, both in the short and long term.

Uppsala University Future Institutes, UUniFI
Uppsala University's Future Institutes, UUniFI, now goes by the name Uppsala universitets framtidsinstitut in Swedish.
UUniFI comprises three thematic institutes:
- UUniFI Migration
- UUniFI Energy Transition
- UUniFI Precision Health
And three more methodologically oriented institutes:
- UUniFI AI
- UUniFI Circus
- UUniFI Goals Conflicts, formerly UUniCORN.
About UUniFI's project development support
Forty-eight applications were received and twenty-two project groups were awarded support:
- Four at UUniFI AI, led by Sven Nelander.
- Six at UUniFI Circus, led by Claes-Fredrik Helgesson.
- Four at UUniFI Energy Transition, led by Malin Göteman.
- Two at UUniFI Migration, led by Olof Åslund.
- Four at UUniFI Goal Conflicts, led by Mats Målqvist.
- Four at UUniFI Precision Health, led by Åsa Johansson.
In total, approximately 5.5 million Swedish kronor will be distributed. In addition to the funding, groups will have access to a support programme comprising six seminars and personal mentors. The programme is led by UUniFI Circus and runs from 27 August 2026 to 12 January 2027.
