Orchid room

Year-round there are plants flowering in here. Study the orchids amazing adaptations to the insects that pollinate them! The Star of Bethlehem orchid Angraecum sesquipedale has a 30 cm long spur and Gongora literally intoxicate the insects by its scent.

The Orchid room houses more than its name implies: Medinilla magnifica from the Philippines with large pink inflorescences, Begonias, and wild species of African Violet Saintpaulia. The African Violet, despite being so common as a house plant, lives on the verge of extinction in its natural environment, threatened rainforests in southern Kenya and northern Tanzania.
