QGIS: Geographic information systems for research data (Infravis Training Module)

  • Date: 14 November 2024, 13:15–16:00
  • Location: English Park, 4-0027
  • Type: Workshop
  • Organiser: Centre for Digital Humanities and Social Sciences

This workshop will introduce you to Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and the use of the open-source software QGIS. The aim is to understand the fundamental concepts of GIS (i.e., vector, raster, and coordinate reference systems), become familiar with potential research analyses in GIS, and practise creating a project, importing and integrating spatial and non-spatial data, georeferencing historical maps, and exporting maps. In the end, we will also briefly cover the available online resources for acquiring data and continuing your studies in the future.

GIS is a powerful computer system used for capturing, analysing, and visualising spatial data. It has been widely applied in research across various disciplines, including climate change analysis, urban planning, land sustainability analysis, risk assessment, cultural heritage management, transportation networks, resource exploration, data visualisation, and mapping, etc.

QGIS is free to download and use. To participate in the workshop, you will need to bring your laptop and install QGIS 3.34 LTR (the long-term version, available at https://qgis.org/download/) beforehand
