Ester Martin Bergsmark earned a doctorate from the Stockholm University of the Arts in the summer of 2023, and the film is part of the graduation project. The film is currently being re-edited into a feature-length version, which is expected to premiere in Sweden later this year.

The screening will be followed by a discussion between Ester Martin and Fanny Wendt Höjer, PhD student at the Centre for Gender Research, Uppsala University. The discussion will be held in English.

About the film

Voice Under is a film that explores the journey out of a frozen, isolated state toward connection and diversity. A scream triggers memories of an assault and throws us back in time.

The film portrays how imagination can both numb and imprison us. As the narrative moves from the isolation of a small apartment, new connections begin to emerge from the darkness—tentative movements back to a pulsing body, to the dance floor, and to encounters with different forms of life and survival. Invisible forces, non-human beings, and other sisters are woven together in the ever-expanding web of life. Amidst violence and trauma, we find pleasure—the pleasure of being together, of being a body.

Where darkness becomes nourishment, where fear, sorrow, and pain are transformed into a source of connection. Through insights into various animals’ survival strategies—which we humans also share—the relationship with the world, with other bodies and life forms, expands.
