To Break With T: Discontinuities of Transition, Trans Masculinities and Trans Temporalities

My PhD project investigates the relationship between testosterone, trans masculinities and trans temporalities, with a focus on narratives of discontinuing exogenous testosterone. It explores how the discontinuation of testosterone shapes the construction of transmasculine identities and temporalities in various contexts, including trans YouTube vlogs, community-created zines, and individual experiences.

The study challenges dominant representations of linear, testosterone-driven transition timelines by examining narratives that disrupt this progression. It particularly seeks to address the underexplored area of trans(masculine) people discontinuing testosterone while still identifying as trans, distinguishing these experiences from those of detransitioning.

This project aims to provide nuanced insights into how testosterone mediates transmasculine identities and temporalities, both through its use and its absence. By analysing these discontinuities of transition, the study seeks to expand theoretical frameworks around trans masculinities and transition temporalities, highlighting the complexities and diversities of trans experiences. It also examines the socio-medical barriers to accessing testosterone in Sweden, situating the discussion within broader issues of systemic healthcare challenges.

Through its interdisciplinary lens, my research contributes to transgender studies, masculinity studies, and digital ethnography, addressing gaps in current scholarship and fostering a deeper understanding of trans identities in flux.

This research project is part of the Swedish Research Council-funded Graduate School in Gender, Humanities and Digital Cultures (GENHDI) which is a collaboration between the Centre for Gender Research at Uppsala University, the Department of Ethnology, History of Religion and Gender Studies at Stockholm University and the School of Culture and Education at Södertörn University.
