AI4Life was a European initiative aimed at bridging the gap between life scientists generating complex bioimage data and computational scientists developing methods for image analysis. As part of the project, the BioImage Informatics Unit (BIIF) contributed to two Open Calls, supporting researchers in developing computational solutions to a range of bioimage analysis challenges.

In this talk, I will introduce the AI4Life Open Calls and BIIF’s role in the collaboration, highlighting several of the projects we supported. I will then focus on one project in more detail: Automated Registration of Light and Electron Microscopy Images for Endo-Lysosomal Analysis. This project addressed the challenge of combining complementary information from fluorescence light microscopy, which reveals protein localization, and electron microscopy, which provides detailed ultrastructural information. We developed an automated registration workflow based on fiducial particles, combining feature detection with point-cloud registration to replace a previously manual and non-reproducible alignment process.

Finally, I will share some of the lessons learned from participating in and organising the AI4Life Open Calls, including experiences with connecting researchers from different scientific and technical backgrounds.
